Entrepreneur Expert Says, Work/Life Balance is a Myth...There is Simply Life to be Lived!
The fact of the matter is that we have just as much, if not more opportunities today than we did two years ago, five years ago, ten years ago. They’re just in different places.
I see so many of our youth these days coming out of college, trying to figure out what they’re going to do with their life. They are trying to understand where they’re going or what is next for them. Or so many people that have been downsized, outsized and rightsized and otherwise displaced; they to are trying to figure out ‘What do I do now?’
And the challenge is that I have seen folks get to the waning years of their lives just to look in the mirror and ask “Is that it?” That bothered me. No, it actually tore me up inside! Because life should never ever be about ‘Is that it?’
Life, to me, is to be lived, it’s to be embraced, it’s a gift that we’ve been given, it’s something that should be vibrant and full of energy; something that we’re living each and every day to the fullest. And when we do it correctly, when we do it on path, when we create something that supports the life we want to have, we enjoy the journey.
Believe me, I have to come to these realizations and lessons the hard way, through the many mistakes I have made. I have screwed up in crazy ways from losing one-third of my wealth from a single bad decision, to having to reinvent myself after a business partnership fell apart, to having to rebuild myself after horrible bike accident that temporarily took away my ability to speak and feel on the right side of my body.
Listen, there is no need for you to skin your knees, break your toes or break your nose along the way – I have already done that for you.
Society would have us believe that the traditional paradigm is… Well, as we were growing up it was Go to school, get good grades. And once you get good grades you can get into a good college; get a good degree; then go get a good job. And once you get that good job, work that good job for 40 to 50 years. And then hopefully you’ll get a good retirement. The challenge is no one ever told us what their definition of “good” was. And if we look at society and society’s norms you find that their definition is really mediocrity.
The point is that society, for some reason, wants to put us into the belly of a bell curve, which is really a life of mediocrity. It is where the average lives! I don’t think we are here to do that. I think we are here to thrive. I think we are here to make a difference. I think we are here to build something that is impactful so we can come to the waning days of our life and say with a big smile on our face, “Now that was living.” That’s what we’re here to do.
I have learned the key is to be intentional about how we live and to design our life from the ground up. The whole concept of work-life balance is a complete fallacy and ludicrous. There is simply life! Compartmentalizing our lives is like cutting us into different pieces, and we feel like we are really living multiple lives, which never feels good, nor is it sustainable.
The question we should be asking ourselves daily is what DO I want my life to look and feel like. Then we go out and design it to make that life happen. My belief is that all business is created to support our community, society and our dreams, so why not design it specifically with that in mind. This is what I call a Legacy Life created through a Legacy Business.
Through the many challenges that I have had as a business owner, entrepreneur, consultant, single full-time father and now husband, I have found that there are 3 primary ideals (alignment, connection, lifestyle) and 6 secondary ideals (identity, uniqueness, figment, desire, reward, freedom) that drive all we do. These 9 Ideals of Legacy™ and the specific questions asked for each Ideal have allowed both my clients and myself to build sustainable, meaningful lives supported by our businesses versus trying to fit life in the cracks of what is left over after we get done doing business. It has allowed us to not only have a grander vision for our lives and the impact we have but to create a truly epic journey.
This is actually very simple to integrate as part of your life and business once you have an understanding of each of the Ideals, the core question of each and your personal answer to each. As an entrepreneur, consultant, mentor and advisor, I have been blessed with personally working numerous entrepreneurs and business owners not only to build their businesses but create a life that will allow them at the end of their days say, “now that was a hell of a ride!” Once you have integrated this into your life along with a few other keys to your business and business model, you find that you truly are living a life by design, one that is crafted by your own hands, on your own terms and in the vision of your own dreams. Just the way it is meant to be.
So whether you are trying simply build a home-based business or a large-scale organization, make sure you define it as a holistic life based on the 9 Ideals of Legacy. Get out there and live it big, live it boldly and live it your way each and every day!
Thoughts for your journey?
1. Define your life. This is more than simply goal setting. This about creating a vivid and emotionally compelling vision of how you want your life to look and how your business will support that life. The key here is to be brutally honest with yourself and filter all decisions through the 9 Ideals.
2. Keep the 9 Ideals in your consciousness. Everyone that attends my Business Breakthrough Academy also gets a mouse pad with the 9 Ideals of Legacy Framework on it to keep the ideals at the forefront of their mind. I too have a mouse pad by my computer so I am constantly anchoring back to my vision.
3. Be a lifelong learner – one of the key traits of the highly successful entrepreneurs that allowed them to build a business and a life is that they are voracious learners. They have mentors. They constantly look for training either live or some other form and they are constantly trying to learn. They invest in their own growth so they can stay relevant in today’s world.
You will be amazed at the epic journey you can create and how fulfilling that journey becomes. So make your vision grand, your journey epic and your legacy significant!
