Dust Devil Spotted in Downtown Columbus, OH

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     JoeRotella saw what he believes to be a dust devil outside his office window: 'I've never seen anything like it! I was on the phone with a colleague and turned my head and saw the plume. At first, I thought it was someone sandblasting or maybe a pipe had burst. But then I realized it was a funnel of dust being kicked up from the construction site. You could actually watch it "crawl" through the lot! I yelled out to a few folks in my office and they ran to the window to see it. Everyone was surprised and most had no idea what it was. Joe Morgan suggested it was a Dust Devil. It came and went so quickly it was tough to film.'
    - hhanks, CNN iReport producer

A dust devil spun up in downtown Columbus, Ohio about 4:30PM EST on 8/19/2013. A dust devil is a strong, well-formed, and relatively long-lived whirlwind. They are comparable to tornadoes in that both are a weather phenomenon of a vertically oriented rotating column of air.
