Red Sox / Yankees Rivalry gets Lethal
The Red Sox / Yankee rivalry is by far the most intense rivalry in baseball. They have hated each other since the 1910's and their fans hate the other team more than the players do. Both clubs have always been a part of the same league and division. They see plenty of each other.
The Red Sox ruled baseball in the early 1900's until they traded the legendary Babe Ruth to the Yankees. For 88 years since the Red Sox watched the Yankees win championship after championship until finally the Red Sox broke through in 2004 and again in 2007.
Alex Rodriguez is just another component to that rivalry. In 2003 both the Red Sox and Yankees sought to make a trade with the Texas Rangers to acquire Rodriguez, regarded as the best ball player in the majors at the time, for their ball club.
In 2004, the Yankees who had already been winning championships to close out the 90's and into the 00's got their man. But at the end of the season in the American League Championship Series the Red Sox overcame a 3 - 0 deficit in the best of seven series to win four straight games to take the pennant.
Now in 2013 Rodriguez who had already sat out most of the season due to injury is the focus of a doping scandal by several players. Rodriguez being the most high profile, and due to his obstruction of Major League Baseball investigators was given the stiffest punishment of 200 game suspension just barely avoiding a lifetime ban from the game like Pete Rose in the 1980's.
While Rodriguez appeals the decision by Major League Baseball he has been allowed to play and is back from injury for the Yankees, just in time to play a series against the Red Sox, their most hated rivalry, in Boston.
