This iReport is part of an assignment:
WikiLeaks Data Terrorists?
The whistle blowing website WikiLeaks.org has recently uploaded a gargantuan 400 gigabyte file entitled Insurance. Who are these people that actively defied the United States government and nullify the terms “classified” and “top secret”. First off who are they and what have they done in the past? The first major leak was made in December of 2007 when the website uploaded files that contained information on living qualities of prisoners being held in Guantanamo Bay. We see since they’ve posted everything from Sarah Palin’s email address to reports on the war in Afghanistan.
So what could be in this mystery file? Well for Julian Asange, Bradley Manning, and Edward Snowden it better be something good. No one knows for sure what's in the file but there is some speculation. Some hypothesize that it could be the rest of Snowden’s secret NSA data. Others believe that this file may be just a bluff to get the United States government off of their backs.
The government is caught between a rock and a hard place in this situation. They have three courses of action that they could take. First they could continue on the war path and give Manning the maximum sentence for his crimes and hope that this discourages anymore “leakers”, but this would mean that Wikileaks would release the file and this could add fuel to the Tea Party’s “Impeach Obama” cause. The seconded course of action would be too cut a deal with all those involved with Wikileaks in order to prevent this data from being common knowledge. On the other hand this plan would make the government look very weak and look even shadier (if that’s possible). My favorite plan which is probably the most risky but could help to gain back public favor by first announcing what they know Wikileaks has on them and then pounding them into the dirt like they are quite fond of doing to their opposition.
