Authorities in China are investigating two Taiwan-based Apple suppliers (Foxconn and UniMicron) following accusations last week made by Chinese activist, Ma Jun and five nonprofit organizations, that the companies were releasing water tainted by toxic metals into the rivers. Last month, a report by China Labor Watch accused Apple supplier Pegatron of “serious” labor violations in three factories, including the employment of underage workers, insufficient wages and poor working conditions. Last year, Foxconn Factory (produces components for the iPad and the iPhone) was exposed due to poor working conditions, excessive overtime and low pay. Some of the factory workers were so overworked, they started jumping out of the windows! Foxconn and other Apple suppliers created a remedy, suicide nets. (smh) When the Fair Labor Association got wind of this, an investigation was opened. Before the investigation was complete, Foxconn raised salaries and hired more counselors. Now, factory workers are receiving a whopping ….wait for it…. $400 per month.
