This iReport is part of an assignment:
Who won the VP debate? |
Sarah Palin'sDiverse Family
She mentioned twice in the debate that her family is diverse. She does have a child with a ability challenge. That’s clearly diversity. However, to say that having different political views represent
diversity in the family is more than a stretch.
Diversity is about having different world views based on clear differences in learning how to negotiate different social, political and cultural contexts. It is difficult to believe that the growing up in Wasilla helps one get exposed to a lot of diversity considering the population size and demographics below (2000 census):
Population - 5,469
Latino 3.7%
White 83.9%
Asian 1.3%
Native American 5.3%
Other 5.2%
Median age 29.7 (this is younger than average age in the U.S.).
Families (non-single residences) 68.8% of the population.
America is increasingly diverse. We need a leader who is born into diversity, lived it and understand it in order to make certain that she or he can reach across America to heal the wounds of divisiveness in order to work together in solving the economic and terrorism challenges.
