    Central American Independence Day

    Independence Day, Guatemala, 2007

I had a chance to travel through Guatemala during the week leading up to Guatemalan independence day. I was impressed by the enthusiasm and the celebrations. It is obvious that this holiday is a big deal for Guatemalans of all classes.

I have 5 images attached, here is some info for each:

    1. (amorpaz.jpg) Children holding sculptures march through La Antigua Guatemala on September 15, 2007. Each sculpture has a set of hands holding up a word: Amor (Love), Paz (Peace), Justicia (Justice), Respete (Respect), Solidaridad (Solidarity), Paz (Peace), Servicio (Service), Libertad (Liberty).

    2. (childrenparade.jpg) These children parade through Zona 1 in Guatemala City as part of Guatemalan independence day celebrations on September 15, 2007.

    3. (flagman.jpg) Man selling Guatemalan flag in La Antigua Guatemala as part of Guatemalan independence day celebrations on September 15, 2007.

    4. (whitegloves.jpg) Members of the Guatemalan military band prepare behind the National Palace in Zona 1 of Guatemala City as part of the Guatemalan independence day celebrations on September 14, 2007.

    5. (drums.jpg) Drum corps and marching bands from all over Sacatepéquez Department converge in the town square in La Antigua Guatemala as part of Guatemalan independence day celebrations on September 15, 2007. This particular band never stopped playing, with the drummers dancing and playing as girls from the bad danced around them. The noise and enthusiasm from this band was great to watch and hear. All the other bands were reduced to stopping and watching.
