BACKSTAGE BEAUTY: Road to the Emmys
For years, the public was to assume that an A-list’s perfectly coifed hair and flawless makeup was effortless. In recent years, the curtain has been pulled back to reveal the “stars” behind the “stars”. As the 65th Annual Emmy Award speeds toward us, we were lucky to speak with two of the brightest of these talents, Emmy Award-winning costume designer Marina Toybina and Patty Bunch, a sought-after make up artist, who received her third nomination this year.
Although honored and excited, Marina Toybina, a previous Emmy winner for her work on The X Factor, doesn’t have much to be nervous about when her category is announced at the Creative Emmy Awards on September 15th. Fact is, Toybina already knows she’ll be taking home her second golden trophy that evening. Marina’s category (“Outstanding Costumes For A Variety Program or Special) is one of the few “juried” categories, which are announced earlier than most.
Toybina has designed for some of the hottest stars in the world including Selena Gomez, Carrie Underwood and Usher. Of course, this puts her in a very exclusive category and one that involves blood (pin pricks), sweat and sometimes tears (of joy). Toybina says, “This was definitely not a career move that happened over night.” In fact, it took almost 15 years of marathon workdays as well as plenty of personal and even professional sacrifices to move her step-by-step closer to what she calls her “dream”.
Toybina’s dream is also a fantasy world for her but not in the “star struck” kind of way. She’s very much about the work. It’s a lesson that aspiring designers should heed. The designer’s secret is both simple and profound. Toybina says at the heart of everything is “Believing in the beauty of design, the art in itself, the craftsmanship of each and every project.” She admits that her career has not been without missteps but calls them “difficult yet necessary lessons”. Looking back, Toybina says, “I am today is due to the person I was yesterday.”
Patty Bunch is one of Hollywood’s most respected makeup artists. Her credits include “Mike & Molly”, “Web Therapy”, “2 Broke Girls”, and “Will & Grace”. This year, Bunch received an Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Makeup for a Multi-Camera Series or Special” for her work on the 85th Academy Awards. Bunch says she heard about her nomination from her daughter Farah Bunch who worked with her on the Oscar makeup team. She says Farah texted her news: “Mom, I think we got nominated for an Emmy.”
This is Bunch’s third nomination, but it’s certainly not “old hat”. She says, “With my career spanning for 35 years and working on situation comedies it’s tough being just nominated, so I'm ecstatic.” She says part of the fun is also working with the actors. At the Oscars this year, she prepped Helena Bonham Carter for the Les Miz musical number among others. But her personal highlight was when Hugh Jackman walked in the room. “You just stop dead in your tracks,” Bunch gushes. “What a gorgeous man!”
Well, as they say, “It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it.” Yet that quip takes on a whole new meaning when you realize how many years of talent, hard work and sacrifice it takes to make it to these rarified Hollywood heights. And on Emmy day, these “stars behind the stars” will have earned their day to shine.
