US COLD WAR IN ASIA-PACIFIC REGION
Rapid economic development of the Asia- Pacific countries and, as a result, increase of their political status causes the rising concern in Washington as they are meant to produce certain threats for the American national security.
Despite close economic relations, the US considers China its main geostrategic opponent in the world and the Asia-Pacific in particular. Overcoming the consequences of the economic crisis Washington is seeking new sales markets. The Pacific Rim is the most preferable region for this purpose. But China holds many key positions here.
The American strategists face a very difficult challenge here, especially considering the fact that the US have no economic leverages to put pressure on China because its economy went on growing even during the crisis period. So Washington gradually increases the military presence in the region as it tries to expand its influence in the countries of Asia-Pacific. However there are certain difficulties in this process either.
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China is the biggest army in the world now. Moreover the Chinese government took a number of measures to increase significantly the armed forces fighting capacity: it gradually increased the defensive budget, purchased new weapons and technologies, raised the level of combat training. PLA carries out regular military exercises both in the territory of China and beyond its boarders. This causes certain and quite explainable concern in many countries of the region (Japan, Korea, Vietnam, etc.), given the fact that they still have unsettled territorial disputes with China. The conflict with Taiwan has also remained unresolved for more than half a century. Current situation comes in handy for the US.
The White house decided to tread the proven path in these circumstances. Proclaiming the ideas of peace and security protection Washington plans to increase its military potential in the economically sound region to suppress China’s influence. The US justifies its military presence by the necessity to counteract the nuclear threat from North Korea, though it is well known that the US national missile defense system is capable to intercept and destroy Korean (as well as Chinese) warheads from the territory of Alaska and California.
Washington also gives full support to such Southeast Asian developing democratic countries as Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, etc. First of all it includes military and technical cooperation. Speculating on the increasing threat from China and North Korea the US sells its outdated equipment to these countries.
The United States plans to relocate about 60% of the warships and submarines to the Pacific Rim by 2020. Besides that the US already has several military bases in Australia. More than that, the American authorities keep on repeating that the US doesn’t strengthen its military presence in the region to oppose China. According to the American politicians the main threat proceeds from North Korea.
The similar situation develops in Europe where America is deploying the part of its missile defense system with the official purpose of protecting the European countries from the Iranian nuclear threat. However Washington still refuses to provide Moscow with legal guarantees that this system isn’t directed against Russia.
Given these facts, it should be obvious that the European and Asian missile defense systems are parts of the US general plan and its real purposes are global domination and world hegemony.
Due to American efforts the Asia-Pacific gradually turns from the economically developing region into a zone of military-political confrontation of the United States and their allies with China. This situation resembles the times of the Cold War with the only difference that Moscow opposed Washington then and Beijing is doing today.
