County Fairs- What Are They Really About Anyway?
Of course, there are a lot of fun rides for kids of all ages at the fair. If it’s food you want, things have come a long way from corn dogs and cotton candy. While those choices are still there for those who love the nostalgia, there are so many more choices.
In recent years, selections have grown by landslides. There are barbeque wagons, Mexican Restaurant Stands, chili cheese fries, curly fries, garlic fries…..and we must not forget the bizarre. If it exists, it can be deep fried—deep fried Twinkies, deep fried cupcakes, fried ice cream. A person could probably walk up to a fair concession stand and ask for deep fried anything and count on getting it.
For those who prefer things a little less exotic, there are many more facets to a county fair. Farm animals have always been a big attraction for many fairgoers. Some like to see the farm babies. There are those who go to get a great deal when “meat” animals are auctioned off. Believe it or not, there are even some who go for the “farm smell”—yes, really.
Then there are the arts and crafts. Artisans sometimes spend the entire year preparing paintings and sculptures to submit for the enjoyment of others, and hopefully a blue ribbon. Photographers, gardeners, and bakers work hard on special projects of their own.
Most people who attend the fair do so to be entertained, but some are there to entertain. They want to make you laugh, intrigue you, or add to your fair going experience in some other unique way.
So, what is a county fair really all about? Only you can answer that question.
