The Jordanian desert of Wadi Rum is home to some of the most astounding, Mars-like scenery this side of the Red Planet! With towering cliffs, sandstone arches, springs of water, and multiple shades of red, this traditional Bedouin area hosted T.E. Lawrence during World War I when he helped organize the resistance to the Turks. While Petra deservedly gets much of the travel press in Jordan, Wadi Rum is nearly as good and much less crowded. Take a jeep ride and a walk here with a Bedouin guide and you will likely have a splendid slice of desert all to yourself!
