Last year I spent a week in Athens, Greece. For lodging, I was torn between booking a hotel near the city’s center or an apartment about 20 minutes away by bus. Both were approximately the same price. After reading numerous online reviews, I ended up going with the flat and greatly enjoyed having the extra space, a full kitchen, laundry, a terrace with incredible views, and, best of all, a feeling of being “at home.” The owner (Giorgios) provided maps and guides, a bus ticket, and plenty of insights about how to make the most of my time in his beloved city. At mid-week, he even delivered a melon from his mother! Best of all, at the end of the week, he invited and took me to see a play just outside the city, where “regular” Greeks—not tourists—go to see excellent, live theatre. My advice: If you have an extended stay coming up, you should consider renting a flat rather than staying at a hotel. You may find your stay more comfortable and rewarding.
