This iReport is part of an assignment:
Speaking up about sexual violence
Yes, its Indian women who has power to decide outcome of Delhi or 2014 elections
Most of you must be wondering why you are receiving a mail from me after so long time. I am writing this mail to my all girlfriends I have ever known in my life. With some of you I have not communicated for years. Today I am writing this mail to all Indian women or any migrated Indian woman to tell that we still have an opportunity to live a safe and free life in India.
As an Indian woman I am quite sure each of us has faced molestation or harassment in any form in our life. Whenever we use public transport or walk on the road or stand in queue or just imaging any scenario, we are always aware that someone must be there staring on our breast or trying to walk close enough just to have a touch. As a teenager I used to frustrated, wanted to punish those pervert who are so obsessed with female body.
Have you ever thought why we or our next generations were forced to go through all those horrible experiences? Why still we feel more unsafe to travel alone in India than we feel in any other developed country. Why women are worshiped in temple but the moment same people move out of temple they treat same women as Dev Dasi.
My personal experiences taught me that inaction and criminalization of our politicians and bureaucrats are responsible for the plight of women in India. They never treated us as an equal citizen of this country. They knew we use our very basic right, but most powerful tool, “OUR VOTE” as instructed by our father or brother or husband. We never thought to use our vote to decide the fate of our generation. We never knew why we are giving our vote to a particular party or candidate. We never knew why our male family members donate to any particular party. We never questioned political parties for our own or our daughters or sons safety. In fact political parties never made any policy keeping in mind that it will help them to secure women vote. Many bills related to women are hanged in parliament.
Why, why we are treated as second class citizens, why no one make policy to give us freedom to live our live safely, happily and on our terms or on any terms we are agreed on.
The only reason I can think of is they knew our vote is free with the vote of male members of our family. Once they convinced them, politicians do not need to put any resource to convince us.
I know most of you are married by this time, some of you have kids. I am asking you do you feel safe in India with your kids (girl or boy it does not matter). Do you feel you and your kids deserve a better atmosphere to live and grow up. Do you have peace of mind when you travel alone or your kids are in school or any place outside?
If your answer to above question is ‘Yes’ than may be you belong to a really privileged society and lucky to have luxury of living a peaceful and safe life in India. If your answer is “NO” than have you ever thought how you can make system of this country accountable for your well-being. I thought about it, I have done loads of research to know why I was so helpless in my own country, why I was forced to live under duress, why I was unsafe in my own city, in my own colony and also what I can do to change it.
My answer to my own questions was that my plight was result of my own ignorance. I never thought before casting my vote. I never thought once in a 5 years opportunity will give me power to ensure a safe environment for me and my family. I learned from my mistake and tried to know, do we really have any one in India which can make sure that I can live my life with freedom and dignity. I had gone through the policy and past history of all current political parties, their commitment to ensure an equal and free country for women.
The outcome of all of this research was a big disappointment for me. I realized I am no one in a country which worships a goddess for nine days. If I will ask something, these politicians will remind me the Laxman Rekha. They do not know the dharma of Laxman. But they keep on reminding me duty of Sita. They forgot that Sita was responsible for the destruction of Ravan. Still I have not loss the hope. I know If need arises an Indian woman can become Rani Laxmi Bai.
So do we really have any option in election to decide on our vote? I will say yes. Do we have a choice to vote for someone who will fight for us? Again my answer is yes, I have a hope. And I found answers of my questions in the policy and work of AAM AADMI PARTY. Before supporting them I have gone through their belief, their commitment and work they are doing right now. They gave me the hope for a better and safer India. Their objective to empower citizens to take all decisions and make politicians and bureaucrats an enabler rather than king of the policy making give me hope that finally police will work for the women safety rather than just taking bribes and serving their Akas.
I know neither I nor most of you belongs to Delhi. So you may feel why I should bother about Delhi elections. I do not have right to vote in Delhi so I will not make an impact on Delhi elections. No, that’s not right. Delhi election will not only decide the fate of Delhi, but it will also give a message to whole country that people are the real king of this country and not the politicians. If AAP succeed in Delhi it will convey message to whole country that still India belongs to people of this country. If politicians and parties will not work for people than people of this country will through them out. Incase AAP loses in Delhi it will give a message to politicians that they are the king; they are not accountable to this country and can get away with anything.
Do you want this to happen in your state, in your country? If not than it is the time, get up and do whatever you can to help AAP win in Delhi elections. You can help them from any part of the world. I am not an official representative of AAP. I am just a follower of a ray of hope. I am doing whatever I can do while living in Singapore and help AAP win in Delhi.
There are many ways you can help AAP. One of the obstacles they are facing is funding. Most of you are aware that current league of politicians spend carors of rupees in each election. And they fund this money from big business houses, corrupt bureaucrats and from many more unknown resources. AAP is committed to use only white money, hard earned by the people of this country. I am regularly making my contribution to help them with campaign. They have listed all the financial details on their website. So you know how your hard money is utilized by them. Donation amount can be anything. If you go through their website you can see people are donating money from as small as 10 Rs to few thousands rupees. This is the totally white money earned by a rikhsa puller, business man, and a teacher to a software engineer. We need to show these politicians that we have power to send our representative from people’s money rather than black money.
Just by avoiding few expenses you can save to fund them. Such as avoid one week end movie and dinner and donate that amount. Or we are having many festivals in next 3 months. Let’s donate to AAP rather than donating to temples and pandit. I am not against any religious set up, but I know one thing my god does not need money to know my feeling. And he/she will be more than happy if I donate for mankind. We are having Teachers Day next month. Let’s choose that day to donate to ensure a safe future for our kids or any day which you would like to prefer.
Also you can help to educate people about AAP and its principle. If you want you can directly work with them in Delhi. If you have any questions or doubt feel free to message me or call me. It will be my pleasure to discuss with you your inhibitions about AAP. At last I just want to say “if there is a will there is a way”. So if you really want to work you can help AAP in any way you want.
