Bo Xilai Trial Wraps, Guilty Verdict Pending
The fifth and final day of the trial saw both the prosecution and the defense making closing statements.
In their summing up, prosecutors said the evidence and facts are sufficient and clear to convict Bo on charges of bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power. Prosecutors said Mr. Bo had refused to admit guilt despite committing "serious crimes," and they called on the court to impose heavy penalties.
Mr. Bo disavowed previous written testimony that he had given to investigators. That written testimony showed Mr. Bo expressing regret for his actions. "I did this against my will." He added, "At that time I still held out a hope they would retain my party membership and allow me to keep my political life."
“Even the lousiest TV drama scriptwriter wouldn’t create something like this,” Bo said.
"The defendant's crimes are extremely serious and he has refused to admit guilt. There is no legal basis for leniency," the prosecution said in a summation of its case.
“I made a big mistake in not managing my family members or staff well, and I apologize to the party and the public,” Bo said in his closing remarks.
“I know I am not a perfect person and I had a bad temper and acted subjectively and I made serious faults and mistakes,” Bo said. “I deeply feel that I failed to govern my family and it had a negative effect on the state. I sincerely accept the investigation from the party and the judicial departments, but the charge of corruption is not true.”
The Jinan Intermediate People's Court said it would announce its verdict at a later date, which has yet to be determined.
