Wildfires near Yosemite as seen from 38,000 feet

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     timdphotos shot this photo from a plane above California's Rim Fire Saturday afternoon. He said he had seen several smaller fires burning about an hour into his flight from Las Vegas to Seattle. 'This one I spotted almost 30 minutes before crossing above it, it was that big. My thoughts focused on the men and women I knew we're fighting the blaze.'
    - dsashin, CNN iReport producer

The 2 hour return flight wasn't expected to be an eventful one. This weekend, though, the view from my window seat aboard flight 605 from Las Vegas to Seattle offered an incredible vantage point 38,000 feet above the wildfires that burned near Yosemite. Looking down on the massive plume of smoke and ash caused by the Rimfire burn, it was hard to imagine anyone on the ground being able to live a normal life let alone fight the intense blaze. The fire which was first spotted on August 17th is about 90 miles west of Mono Lake and has involved 150,000 acres of land. The roughly 3,500 state, private and federal personnel fighting the blaze have it about 15% contained.
