This iReport is part of an assignment:
Speaking up about sexual violence
An Indian woman's request
I moved from India, to the States, in 2002. From the time I was in 6th grade, I have experienced various levels of unpleasant unwelcome overtures from men while living in India and now in the US. The biggest difference after I moved here was the realization that these gestures are wholly unacceptable and something that no woman should have to put up with as if it is her lot in life. Sexual harassment is an ongoing issue across the globe and what India lacks is a stronger sense of gender equality and stricter laws against these crimes, akin to or sometimes better than some other countries. There are bad people in every country and while those that are sociopaths are unfazed by laws, the majority gets more brazen in the absence of consequences. I sincerely hope that this international media spotlight helps in bettering the life of women in India and world over, as opposed to racists using this as a forum to offer baseless biased opinions and posting colored statements. As for foreign travelers, still interested in visiting India, please educate yourselves more on how to be safe during your travels across my beautiful country and take all additional precautions that anyone should while traveling in a land other than the one they live in.
