Business Cards that Don’t Suck!
I remember my first business card, it made me feel like I was important like I was somebody after all a business card says who you are and what you are all about. Even in this electronic age that we find ourselves in we as business people still exchange business cards, we may not run back to the office to stick them in our Rolodex but rather we take a quick picture with our smartphone and try to link up with them through social media.
If you just joined a fairly well established organization your ability to change the look of your business card is pretty small unless you are in charge of business cards. If you own a business then you have a great deal of input on how your business card will represent you and your business and in short why not make sure they don’t suck. Think about it, the average business card is white or ivory, has a logo probably in the upper left hand corner, your name, maybe your degrees and your contact information and it looks like everyone else s business card which is why when someone hands you a circular business card or one made of plastic or metal you stop and have a real good look at it and think “hey I’m going to hold onto this one” , its different.
A few years ago when we started shopping for business cards for RunGoddess, I wanted square business cards and this was not an easy find in Canada in fact I had to go to a printer in the US to have them done. They are different and with an odd shape. I also have business cards that just introduce me as a professional and I think everyone in the business world should have their own cards. I was working with a consultant years ago who presented me with his own personal business card and I thought what a great way to make a contact. It wasn’t his company’s business card but his own. For this reason I have my own, no matter what company I work for they will always be in fashion since they are truly me. I have my phone numbers on the card, I have my personal email address, so if I change company’s it will not be effected and I also have my own website which I will talk about in another post where I will tell you why you should have your own personal website. In the mean time until we have that discussion, I want you to go over to GoDaddy.com and see if www.yourfirstnameyourlastname.com is still available if so you may want to think about grabbing it.
In the design of your business card, Google business cards and do an image search to see a selection of unique designs to see if anything inspires you. Once you have a design in mind look on the internet to find a printer that can do this for you. If they are not located in your city who cares, if they are ten states away and you think they are going to represent your business well, order them. One of the best companies for business cards that I have come across and they produced my personal business cards is MOO located at www.moo.com. They offer a number of unique ideas to help set your business apart from your competitor. Remember everyone says they are unique and different then their competitors in their marketing material but how do they show it?
