About an hour and a half from Siem Reap is this ruin of a temple called Beng Mealea. It was originally set to be Angkor Wat but the idea was scrapped midway through construction and the temple has been left in ruin for years. If you visit Beng Mealea it is the most fun you can have at a temple. I equate Beng Mealea to the perfect childhood fort. You can run on top of the temple, hang off tree branches, find hidden caverns, and just climb over everything. What is so great about this place is that it virtually untouched and you could never find all its secrets in one visit. It is not a traditional tourist spot, which makes it the best of all the temples in the Siem Reap area to visit. You are not pushed around by rude tourists; you are climbing through blocked off doorways into expansive fallen stone rooms. You are not told not to do something; you just go down some deep dark hallway and hope there is an exit. It truly was an amazing place to visit. What is sad to say is if our group had gone to Beng Mealea first we would have been disappointed with Angkor Wat because of all the tourists and rules.
