Blurring Lines: Regarding Cyrus, Thicke and the VMAs

Much has been made of Miley Cyrus’ raunchy Video Music Awards performance. I’m somewhat at a loss, however, as to why her scant attire and gyrations (her twerking) would shock and dismay. We’ve seen all this before. Nothing new. It’s de rigueur behavior for every young female performer these days. All that’s really left is taking the stage completely naked. Perhaps that day will arrive someday soon and we can finally reset performance standards to something truly shocking- talent.

Until that day, I do have to ask. Why just the girls required to do the bumping and grinding? Why do the boys get a pass? Fair’s fair, right? Let’s have a bit of the same sexual objectification for the male of the species, shall we.

If Robin Thicke is so bold that he thinks it’s edgy and hip and cool sharing the stage with a near-naked, tongue-lolling, twerking, recently post-teen– while he referees in full garb and glasses– he can be bold enough to return the favor.

At the next marketing ploy masquerading as a music awards program (‘music’ used ever so loosely), he should strip down to his tidy whities and shake his money-maker at a fully-clothed Miley Cyrus. Only fair. He can be as inventive as he wants with his foam finger.
