This iReport is part of an assignment:
Fukushimsa A Catastrophe in Progress
My questions as I read this article “Why Fukushima is worse than you think” are these: 1; why haven’t the Japanese asked for help before now? 2; why isn’t the United Nations keeping closer tabs on this situation? 3; isn’t this a situation that affects the entire world? And 4; what is going to be done about this problem?
Nuclear energy is not exactly new, but so few people actually knows what to do when a reactor goes wrong that many people can’t help but to wonder if it is safe to use Nuclear Power at all. Let’s face it, not one country has a shield around their cities to keep harmful radiation away from their people. This is reality, not some science fiction movie. The devastation caused by the radioactive waste soaking into the ground and into the ocean will change the life forms there for all time.
Now I’m not saying Godzilla is going to pop up and attack every land mass around, but we will definitely see drastic changes in the sea life. As for the ground and the life forms on it, well; look at Chernobyl in the Ukraine. Scientist are still studying the fallout there. It is a known fact that some fish life that still remain near ground zero is much smaller than they had been for their age.
Those reactors are still capable of blowing from what I’ve been reading and they can’t keep them cool forever with all of the leaks they have. Something has got to be done for the safety of the Japanese as well as the life that lives on land and in the ocean. The Japanese people must survive and it looks like they need help.
