I remember the day just like it was yesterday, I had taken my 5 year old out to eat at McDonalds something we did once in awhile for fun. We had finished eating and she begged to play on the play toys I said ok. As she started to play I proceeded to tell her in spanish to please becareful of the little kids she answered in english and finished coming down the slide when an older white lady said I am so sorry that your maid/nanny can't speak english then proceeded to walk over to where I was sitting and proceeded to call me some awful names and said that she needed my employers number to let them know what I had done to their daughter and that this was AMERICA and in america we speak english so I should take my mexican arse back to mexico where I came from. All the while my daughter is standing there wondering whats going on and asking why are you being mean to my mommie? The woman was shocked that I was the mother since my daughter is very light skinned with blond highlights and tons of freckles. No wonder people often ask if she is mine. When you look at my daughter you would never know that she is Native American Yaqui Indian and Mexican most people think she is irish or german never mexican or indian. When I was able to get a word in edge wise I told the lady that I felt sorry for her children and walked off with my daughter. On the ride home my daughter was crying and asking why that mean lady said such awful things? I told her thats because some people don;t know any better and we need to teach them right from wrong. Just like Dr. Martin Luther King tried to she said Dr. King was a smart man and maybe just maybe if people learned to love one another life would better. Since the day my daughter could talk I always taught her to be proud of her heritage and where she came from she used to love to tell people that she was a white girl on the outside but the mexican/indian brown girl was just waiting for the right time to come out and say look at me. I am proud to say that 11 years late she has become that mexican/indian girl and is proud to announce it to the whole world and when people say racisit things to her she just responds with your just upset cause your not lucky like me and have a beautiful tan all year long.
