This iReport is part of an assignment:
Are chemical weapons a ‘red line’?
Send gas masks not rockets. Congress will say no.
On another note, Russia obviously think a time machine transported the world 100 years back to a time propaganda like theirs actually worked in convincing people. Just saying "Assad would not do something like this because it was not advantageous" -- are you serious? How about after failed attempts to remove "insurgents" from outside his capital city, his army chiefs grew frustrated. That seems like a perfect excuse. Why rebels would kill 1,500+ people just to set up a conspiracy for western countries, that makes much less sense. Considering America is now-a-days acting pretty impotent I don't know what they would be expecting for all the lives they cost. Assad did this. His fate should be no worse than that experienced by those innocent men, women, and children.
In my humble opinion, I could not sit back and watch this atrocity happen. After reading two years worth of headlines about slaughter, I have not become numb to it as many other people seem to have done. These are people, it could be me or you or anyone.. they have done nothing to be exiled in the millions and over 200,000 killed. The fact that the world has sat by and watched for so long puts shame on each and everyone of us. However, congress will never agree to this. We should have moved in the beginning to seek a swift end to this atrocity.
I think, if anything, we should poll the people of Syria and ask them -- because that should matter more. There was an interview with a woman on another news channel, she lost 11 people in the chemical attack that were family (5 were children). She, amazingly, said that she does not think that the US and the West in general should act. And this woman was outside of Syria and Assad's influence. Her logic was simple: it would only cost more innocent people lives. Diplomacy is the only way forward, according to her. My answer to her is simple.. Assad does not know the meaning of diplomacy and not doing anything costs more innocent lives every day!!! However, I respect what she wants and I do not think we should impose ourselves, lest we risk the world seeing us as the corrupt police officers looking out for our own interests. We should look out for the people of Syria first. The benefit? We can all sleep easier at night.
