26 MILES...to Catalina Island Fun & Romance
Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance."
The 4 Prep's song "26 Miles" has got it right.
Though summer may be "officially" over, there is still time to enjoy beautiful (and romantic) Catalina Island.
When I talk to longtime Southern California residents, I am always shocked to learn how few of them ever make the effort to go that 26 miles off the coast.
Whenever I visit Catalina Island, I always remark to myself how it feels like I have traveled hundreds of miles away when it is merely 2 dozen miles across. There is that feeling of being somewhere unique and different. Another thing that makes the Los Angeles county island memorable for me: when I was a young lass, my father would pile all us kids on his 36-foot cabin cruiser and we would make the trip over.
It was always so exciting to sleep on the boat and explore what I thought was such an exotic location. Being in Catalina reminds me of my youth.
What is also fantastic about this lovely oasis is that you can make a trip affordable by knowing how to work it all out. First off, traveling on the Catalina express boat on your birthday is FREE! The round-trip boat ride must be commenced on your actual birthday but you can stay any number of days and still come back FREE! (http://www.catalinaexpress.com/birthday_promo.php)
Looking for more deals for my upcoming birthday trip, I visited the Catalina island Chamber of Commerce website and found more deals! (http://www.catalinachamber.com/specials/birthdaycatexp)
"Birthday Island" features some great deals on hotels, restaurants, tours and equipment rentals.
For instance, I am planning to stay at the Pavilion and using the "3 Perfect Days" promotion, you can book 3 nights and only pay for two. (http://www.visitcatalinaisland.com/threeperfectdayspromo.php)
Restrictions do apply. but using the combination of the free birthday ride on the Catalina Express and the various good deals available with the "Birthday Island" promotion means that a very nice holiday can be had very close to home and for a reasonable amount of money.
Always have your eyes open for deals like this. I make it a habit to read my local Sunday newspaper's travel section where good deals can always be found. If there is a hotel or restaurant I like in Catalina, I will get on their email list to check out any extra promotions they may be offering.
Though my tips might sound obvious, combining them all can make the difference between spending all your money without pause and taking advantage of some great deals to make things carefully affordable.
Happy Sailing to Catalina Island.
