Photo Story: A Hindi School on the outskirts of Mumbai
In 2011, I worked on a photo story on a Hindi school located in the outskirts of Mumbai. I was curious to see for myself what is the atmosphere like in these schools. After initial hesitance (since I carried a camera), I was allowed access by the school principal. The school I visited also served mid-day meals provided by the Indian government. A few things were striking: This Hindi school was in shambles - with broken partitions, broken benches and broken desks. Some students brought tiffin from home, some ate mid-day meals on ground, those I could speak to, complained about th quality of mid-day meals.
On July 16 this year, 22 children lost their lives after eating contaminated mid-day meal in Bihar – many similar incidences were reported in following months in schools across India. I reckon to say, the situation could be dire in schools in other parts of India too - and the concern is not just about issues relating to mid-day meals, but also about quality of education.
