WHY THE EMBATTLED UNIUYO VICE CHANCELLOR MUST GO
The Uniuyo Management Team led by Prof. (Mrs.) Comfort M. Ekpo would be honourable if they would tender resignation letter and apologize to the nation, for failing the entire University Community and pushing them into the error and worse calamity in Uniuyo academic history. The desire to hang unto power at all cost and to continue to play games with the exalted office of the Vice Chancellor is an anathema and desperation to use the “sword” in their hands against the “perceived” enemies of notorious administration.
The Vice Chancellor should be contented with whatever benefits she had derived from the abused opportunity. After all, from inception she was not qualified for the office, going by the Dr. Nuhu’s interview panel assessment, but was imposed upon the University to feel a gap because an indigene of Akwa Ibom MUST be there. Too bad! What then is expected of a faulty foundation and bad product of a “lame” leadership in Council? University of Uyo desires for a redeemer! Would Prof. Kimse Okoko be the messiah?
The Pentecost of June 12, 2013 upon Uniuyo was a divine visitation to expose the atrocities/oppressions of religious swindlers in power, which the Most High frowns at. And this opportunity needs not be gambled with if the dignity of Nigerian students and entire humanity is to be restored. Expressly, Prof. (Mrs.) Comfort M. Ekpo, Prof. Okon Ansa and Prof. Paul Ekwere have no business in the offices they are occupying. They manipulated Dr. Nuhu’s led Governing Council enough and it cannot be “business as usual”. The then Council’s orders and directives were flouted with ignominy.
We re-echo, the Vice Chancellor swindled the then Council to the Office she has now converted to a museum. The case of Architect Otu Umoren, the former Director of Physical Planning Unit, would have been the incident that could have forced her out of office, but she manipulated her ways through. The then Council was at the verge of dropping a sledgehammer on her because of complications in the award of contracts. In her usual subtle manners, she tricked Arch. Otu Umoren into accepting all the indicting responsibilities, to exonerate her with a hope of earning her supports and “coverage”. Before the Arch. Otu Umoren could realize the extent of how he was lured into the error by his boss, the then Council had relieved him of his appointment, while the Vice Chancellor narrowly escaped. This was unfortunate!
Bursary Department of the University is a quagmire, and should be subjected to independent, external and NUC’s supervised audit check. The University staff payroll accounting system cries for verifications. The vouchers sent to National University Commission on staff remuneration are at conflict with what the University retains and pays to its staff. For instance, a particular staff on CONTISS 3 in the actual University payroll would be on CONTISS 6 in the University payroll sent to NUC. This kind of fraudulent practice accounts for the reason staff remuneration in University of Uyo is lower, as compared to other federal universities. With Bible in one hand and corruption/oppression in the other hand, why would there not be conflicts in the system? God is not mocked!
Faculty of Sciences has been relocated to the Main Campus to give impression that the administration is working and committed to students’ needs. In playing to the gallery, this Management Team has subjected the studies of science courses in the University to object of ridicule. With shabby and inadequate facilities, students have been relocated to empty laboratories. The Micro Biology laboratory, for instance, has not been constructed to the university laboratory status. If the laboratories in the present state are to be photographed and NUC is invited for inspection, there would be a rethink concerning the accreditation granted to the institution.
The situation in the University of Uyo calls for a new Management Team to look into issues critically and recover the lost glory of the institution. The present Management Team is terribly biased and emotional in tackling issues. To their conviction, in the Uniuyo post inferno assessment, the Management Team has been so rubbished, embarrassed and ridiculed, and some students, staff and a particular Unit have been fingered for being responsible, hence earmarked for vengeance. The present crops of Management Team do not favour the principle of reconciliation, reconstruction and rehabilitation. This attitude is detrimental to the smooth administration of a University towards realization of universal objectives of University education.
In the 21st century, autocratic managers are far behind time. Prof. (Mrs.) Comfort M. Ekpo, Prof. Okon Asuquo Ansa and Prof. Paul Ekwere must not see their clinch to powerful offices as a do-or-die affair and the only avenues through which their personal needs and desires could be satisfied.
Nigerian students re-echo the advice of Plato “Our discussion is on no trifling matter, but on the right way to conduct our lives”. Hence, there is a need to be attended to. We are wailing, “JUSTICE be done in Uniuyo to save our DESTINIES from stranglehold of maladministration”! We are aware of the present Uniuyo Management Team’s inefficiency in administration and are graving for a change to save the institution from further destruction. In the words of Will Durant, we conclude, “When one tries to change institutions without having changed the nature of men, that unchanged nature will soon resurrect those institutions”.
So, Mma Ekpo, Farewell!
