Life in the early 1980s: Style and politics
When Beards were still allowed in the Coast Guard.
- nsaidi, CNN iReport producer
Before 1985 the Coast Guard and Navy both could have Beards, with permission of course, but that all ended when someone determined it was time for a "Clean-Cut" look. After many shaved their beards off there were a lot of "Ugly" faces out there......In this image I was stationed at Air Station Port Angeles, WA. I was a mechanic on the HH-52 helicopters what we operated there at the time. I was a qualified Flight Mechanic which allowed me to not only repair the helo's but fly in them as a Hoist Operator and Radio Operator.
My Son Jerall is laying on my lap, age about 1.5yrs old. He's waring his 80's rainbow shirt.
You'll note the 70's/80's remote control in my had, that was the very first TV we bought with a Remote feature.
Note the Large Stereo Speakers, a must have back then.
I retired from the Coast Guard in 2008 after 30yrs service. I currently operate an RV repair business in Idaho.
From what I remember about those early 80's days was that I don't recall anything about politics from that time. I voted, but didn't pay any attention (like most young people) and only voted for who I thought I liked. Didn't know the issues what so ever.
I recall watching Crossfire from time to time, but cannot recall any specific stories, been a long time!
