Phl court stops release of 'pork'
After an en banc meeting, the high court issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) on the release of lawmakers’ funds left in the 2013 national budget.
Signed by all SC justices, the TRO also prevented the release of Malampaya funds allocated for use of President Benigno Aquino III.
The court has scheduled an oral argument on October 8.
The high court issued the TRO amid public outrage, calling for the abolition of pork barrel assigned to all members of Congress.
Businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles triggered its abolition after she was tagged by whistleblower Benhur Luy as the brains of the P10 billion pork barrel scam involving some senators and congressmen.
In his testimony, Luy said Napoles established fake nongovernment organizations (NGOs) to facilitate the release of several lawmakers’ funds.
Napoles is now behind bars after her voluntary surrender three weeks ago, while Luy is under the government’s witness protection program.
