CNN PRODUCER NOTE ANO07 spent all of September 11, 2013 reflecting on the 12th anniversary of the attacks: 'Yesterday, was a hot and hazy day. It didn't have the sharpness it usually has. The new tower, finished (from the outside and from across the Hudson it looks finished anyway), stood tall, its shape slightly hazy in the morning heat. It looks as if it finally filled the gap, the hole in the Lower Manhattan skyline left by the collapse of the Twin Towers on 9/11 2001. The new tower represents the future, in a way, but it's a constant reminder of how it came to be and, hence, a window into the past... as if the future (the new tower) and the past (the imprints of the Twin Tower, now the 9/11 Memorial at its base) co-exist in some way and, together, tell the story of this day. Because, while the (finished) new tower gives a sense, a feeling of hope, it is also a reminder of what happened there twelve years ago... Future generations may just be aware of the Freedom Tower (or WTC I, I think it's called now), but if they look closer, at the base of the tower, they'll be able to learn about the past and have a better, complete understanding, and, with that, a renewed reverence for the new Lower Manhattan skyline. At least, that's what comes to mind when I look at the new tower... and remember the ghosts of the Twin Towers.'
