    The flood...firsthand

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Jake Koplen says he's pretty sure building a makeshift dam in his Boulder, Colorado, yard out of wood and mud and debris was probably a smart idea: 'I think that saved the house because our neighbors on both sides have water in the house. I think we're the only house on our block that didn't have water in it.' He says his house is now something of an area curiosity because of what's just beyond the driveway: a deep crack in the road that extends down a few feet and goes all the way down the block. 'It's a large channel. You can see all the layers of soil and there's big boulders at the bottom. It's unbelievable.' He shot these photos the morning of Friday, September 13, to show the high volume of water coming through. 'We almost evacuated last night, but we decided we have a second story of our house so we would be fine.' But, he says, there is a silver lining in all those storm clouds. 'You see the best side of people even when every thing else is unbelievably bad.'

Here are a few pictures of the dams we built to protect our house. It worked too! We were the only house on our block that had no water breach inside.

I also included a few pictures of the first few moments of the flood, at 4 am on Thursday morning, and then a little later, at 9 am

Finally, I included 2 pictures of the chasm that we found this morning, in place of our street.
