Cancer Lighthouse Construction Begins
The lighthouse will be located on the bank of the Ohio River with easy access from Interstate 24 at the Metropolis exit just north of the Ohio River.
The lighthouse, aka Hope Light, will be 30 foot high and designed to replicate a real lighthouse similar to those in Cape Cod, MA. It will consist of a white painted steel tower beneath a teal daymark band and black lantern room with a white-light marine lantern. The teal daymark band represents the fight against ovarian cancer.
The lighthouse has been planned for construction since 2005, however, has been delayed due to lack of funding in a poor economy and recent flooding. Required funding goal for the light was finally reached in June from donations to The Metropolis Hope Light Project which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity.
The lighthouse will be located at the entrance to Dorothy Miller Park in Metropolis. The park is a memorial to Dorothy Miller who, herself, was a cancer victim. Land for the Lighthouse was provided by the City of Metropolis at no cost. Design of the lighthouse was accomplished by Eggemeyer Associates Architects also at no cost.
