This iReport is part of an assignment:
Speaking up about sexual violence
Sexual Harassment at Decameron Puerta Vallarta
I was staying in room 5329 from the 7th- 11th. I was moved to room 1302 on the 11th following harassment from two hotel employees.
The two male employees began calling my room (5329) at 9pm local time on the 7th. The male on the phone had a Spanish accent and would ask “Hey baby, You wanna fuck” over and over. I would hang up and the call would come again with the same question. The calls came intermittently throughout the night, with the last call at 4am.
I assumed it was a drunk guest at the hotel playing a prank but I came to the front desk to inform them of the situation the next morning. When I got to the hotel desk, the female guest in front of me was complaining to the staff that she had received harassing phone calls all night. I interrupted and informed them I had gotten the same calls. As it turned out, the other guest and her daughter were staying in room 5330, right next to me. Staff took our information and said they would look into the situation.
On the night of the 8th, I received no phone calls, but I later found out other female guests in building 5 received calls from the same caller that night, asking the same question. On the night of the 9th, the calls began to my room again. Same male voice, same question. I asked where he was but the just kept asking the same question and groaning into the phone.
The phone call came again at 4:33am on the 11th. I had had enough so I decided to play the game back. Using my cell phone to record the call(Attachment: Sept 11, 2013 0434am), I asked the caller where he was, and told him I wanted to see him. He became confused and with a lack of English, was unable to have a conversation. I hung up.
The phone rang a few minutes later, but this time the male spoke English with a Spanish accent. He repeated the same question as the previous caller and I asked if he was staying in the hotel, he laughed. I told him that if he wanted to ask me questions, he had to answer my questions too. this seemed to amuse him so I continued asking questions to keep the caller on the phone and see what type of information I could get out of him. The caller described the previous man as his “co-worker” and I grabbed my cell phone and began recording the call again(Attachment: Sept 11, 2013 0511am). Throughout he conversation the man told me his name was Carlos, and when he asked his co-worker what his name was, he replied “Christian”. It was apparent neither had bothered to make up a name. Carlos told me they could see my room from the restaurant they worked at called the Piccolo (Attachment: Sept 11, 2013 0521). I told him I was not familiar with that specific restaurant and asked them to come outside the front doors so I would be able to look out the door and see.
I hung up the phone and went to the front door. Looking through the peep hole, I could see one man, dressed in a white tank top climb up the ladder at the side of the restaurant and crouch down on the roof. No one came out of the front doors.
The phone rang again. When I answered Carlos asked me why I didn't come out side. I explained I hadn’t seen anyone come out the front doors and he laughed. I tried telling him I had called security and they were in the room now listening but he laughed again and told me he knew I was lying. I tried threatening to call the police. As if this was the the funniest thing he had ever heard he laughed and said “The Police here? The Police here will not help you”. I hung up.
I believed him. I knew the Police wouldn’t do anything for me.
My son woke up as I called the front desk and was demanding to speak with a manager. I was transferred. When the night shift manager came on the phone, I explained the situation and told him that I had recordings of the conversations. He told me to unplug my phone, get some sleep and come file a complaint to the front desk later.
Knowing that two men knew what room I was in, and were obviously watching me the last thing my instinct told me to do was unplug the only source of security I had while alone in a room with my 4 year old son.
I screamed at the manager on the phone and asked him if he was fucking nuts! I then explained forcefully that he had 5 minutes to have a security guard come check out the situation or I would blast the recordings all over every social media network known to man, telling the world that Decameron resorts are unsafe and the management won’t help women being harassed. This got his attention. He assured me security would be there shortly and we hung up.
The phone rang as soon as I hung up and again it was Carlos. He asked me where I had gone. I told him to come outside and see me and I hung up.
My son was playing games on my laptop at the time. I told him I was going to get some Ice and would be right back.
I grabbed my camera and room key, checked through the peep hole, and seeing that the roof was empty, I came out the front door and made sure it locked behind me. I tried knocking on 5330 to see if the other women were there to help identify the caller, but what I didn't know was they had changed rooms the day before. With no answer, I walked to the stairs. I looked down from the balcony at the stairs. Standing at the back of the café across from Piccolos restaurant with the lights turned on was a man in a navy blue shirt and navy blue pants. I recognized the uniform as that of the maintenance workers at the Decameron resort. He waved. “Hey baby, you coming down?” he asked.
I tried to use my camera to take photos of him but the humidity fogged up the lens and
when the flash went off he ducked behind the archway.
The security guard came down the pathway and I pointed from the balcony to the back of the café. I watched as the security guard talked to Carlos(who stayed behind the archway). As the man from the roof cam out of the back of Piccolos I shouted to the security guard and pointed at him saying he was the other man. The security guard brought him into the back of the Café. When the security guard came out, he told me to go back to my room so I left.
Not 5 minutes after coming back to the room the phone rang. “Now that I’ve seen your face, I know you are beautiful”. It was Carlos. I slammed the phone down. I called the front desk again and requested the Manager. I asked what time the Hotel Manager started in the morning and was told 7am. I said I would be at the front desk at 7am and expected the manager to be there as well.
At 7am on September 11, I met with the Guest Services Manager, Ricardo. I explained the details of the phone calls and events leading up to our meeting. It was then that I played the recordings for him. I watched as Ricardo’s expression changed while listening to the recording when Carlos told me where he works and his co-worker’s name...
Later that day after changing rooms, Ricardo informed me the offenders had been found and legal charges were being pressed.
I have emailed this event to Decameron Resorts, the Canadian Embassy, Global News and CTV Vancouver.
Over a dozen women were effected by the harassment of these two men and no one was willing to do anything to stop them.
Sexual harassment like this goes unreported every day and it needs to stop.
