Weekends in America
Event Commemorates 125 Years
The town’s website gives an extensive history of the development of the area, starting with surveying of the quaint community in 1865. The first post office reportedly opened in 1888. This was the year that the town was officially founded. Many homes were built, orange groves were planted, and businesses opened to serve the residents and workers.
Today, a celebration was held in honor of Palermo’s 125th anniversary. It all started at 7:00 a.m. with a pancake breakfast. Later in the morning, a parade was held. A car show, face painting, and games were also part of the festivities. There were even races and other competitions with prizes.
Vendors set up to sell their wares. There was even free swimming in honor of the event. While the “Field Day” is held every year, efforts were made to make sure all had an extraordinary good time on this monumental occasion.
