Inciting Positivity In Today's Shattered World
“Rebel forces incite young 10 year old kids to fight civil war”
"President to stand trial for incitement to murder"
These are the kind of headlines that we've been reading for decades when mainstream media uses the word 'Incitement' for various provocative negative actions mostly in wars and arranged crimes.
On November 11th, 2011 2 individuals decided that it was time for a new definition of ‘Incitement' they wanted to make a statement AGAINST war, crime, corruption, injustice & make a statement FOR positivity, contribution, peace, unity & equality.
A global movement called Incitement was born, founded by Zikry Kholil (Malaysian) & Daniel de Gruijter (Dutch).
Not “just any event”
At first glance, to any outsider, it might seem like just another event. But there’s something different about Incitement. In its first 2 years Incitement has spread to almost 20 countries, with no investment and no funding. So what is it that makes this movement spread like wildfire?
It’s what the founders call ‘The Incitement Experience’. And it isn’t rocket science.
It’s an experience more than just another event.
If you’ve ever been to an event, you’ve probably noticed that very often you come in, sit down on an uncomfortable chair, listen to a bunch of speakers who disappear backstage after their presentation, if you’re lucky you get to network a bit with your fellow attendees & once the event is over you go back home. The day after, you’ve probably already forgotten most of what happened.
When you go to Incitement you get to relax in comfortable beanbags in a beautifully designed auditorium, before the event even starts you will already get to know your fellow ‘Inciters’. The event kicks off with a lot of energy & an energetic MC to entertain you. There is no backstage, the speakers sit in a beanbag right next to you. There is a massive amount of interaction & the audience have plenty of opportunity to ask the speakers any questions, giving them feedback right on the spot or engage in a conversation before or after the event. The talks themselves are built around a theme that varies every month. But each theme is tied into a challenge that the country or city is.
Incitement is free of charge. The goal is not to generate revenue. The goal is to get people inspired to take action or become a volunteer with the Incitement Growth initiative, which focuses on helping out refugees and orphans.
Incitement Growth is a team of volunteers, led by co-founder Yu Jin. Yu Jin is extremely passionate about helping his fellow mortals, after attending Incitement he was inspired by what founders Zikry & Daniel were trying to do.
Every week the Incitement Growth Team goes around the city to visit a refugee school and hosts an event on location. Since the refugees have no way of coming to Incitement, Incitement comes to them. Through interactive presentations & exercises essential skills are being taught. Skills that are not being taught in school, let alone in a school for. Skills or traits such as self-confidence, goal setting & entrepreneurship. The curriculum is broad & the results are impeccable.
From Incitement Growth to TEDx
One particular student, Ahmed Bashiir Kahiye, participated very actively during these ‘mini-Incitements.’
Very soon, the Incitement team decided to bring him & his teacher Shafie Sharif to the main event to share their story. What happened there was incredible. After his presentation was published on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5D7ECczGRhg this led to an invitation for Ahmed to speak at TEDx.
The ultimate vision for Incitement Growth is to reimagine education, & what better place to start than at a refugee school - since they don’t have any at all.
A tight community both online AND off
We’re living in a connection economy. It’s extremely easy to connect to anyone, anywhere through social media. And the communities that are a result of this are incredible. The real strength, however, is striking a balance between an online & offline community, & this what Incitement has done.
The online community is very active sharing resources, knowledge & information. But offline there is a lot going on. During Incitement many attendees find future business partners or friends. Incitement is facilitating this connection, both online & offline.
And there’s also refugee communities...
The refugee schools have started their own international community amongst other refugee communities & less privilege communities which has enabled them to cross-pollinate & cross-collaborate in the form of education, integrate cross-culturally, events and business opportunities hence creating their very own community.
The beauty of this initiative has brought a major positive impact to the refugee communities in South-east Asia.
Another initiative that was created under the Incitement Movement umbrella is the Incitement Youth project. Incitement Youth (The Incitement Movement for College & High School Students) gives students of Malaysia a unique impact that literally breaks all traditional education methods.
What’s so crazy good about this youth movement is that Like-Minded smart talented kids started to discover & bond with each other during Incitement Youth Events. These students aren’t just the best in the country, but passionate individuals who want to grow and create anything to contribute in making the world a better place.
Essentially you have the smartest students of Malaysia all gathered in one event together wanting to co-create projects, causes, mini movements, & programs that matter with like-minded youths. The youth are also going to start their first Incitement Youth International movement in South Africa in August 2013.
The beauty of this Incitement movement is the Incitement Growth & Incitement Youth project which was built and co-founded by complete strangers who were drawn into the cause by attending one of the events & decided to take action after that.
Public speaking made fun
Incitement has also hacked their way in teaching public speaking through the Incitement SpeakUP! Program. SpeakUP! is a free crowd-source, community driven public speaking platform. The program focuses on teaching and guiding individuals the art of public speaking & being great at your pitch.
How did Incitement start?
Both Zikry and Daniel work for Mindvalley http://www.mindvalley.com/. Today Mindvalley is the main sponsor for Incitement.
Mindvalley organizes an annual event called AwesomenessFest www.awesomenessfest.com. They wanted to attend this event in 2011 but their application was not accepted, as they were both too new to the company. So they decided to organize their own event.
This started out as a knowledge sharing & public speaking platform. Anyone could come up on stage to practice their public speaking skills. Initially this was only available inside Mindvalley, but after opening it up to the public it soon grew bigger & bigger.
In order to keep growing the concept had to change, because people wouldn’t come to watch other people practicing their public speaking skills. So the founders went back to the drawing table & tweaked the concept into what it is today; a platform that incites positivity to get people to take action & spark social change.
Zikry & Daniel started experimenting ways to enhance the audiences experience thus making the Incitement Experience the one major reason why people keep coming back bringing new fanatics to the movement.
In 2012, only 1 year after launching Incitement, the movement was highlighted by www.masterpeace.org as one of the 10 most influential movements in the world.
Incitement www.theincitement.com hopes to touch lives around the world by delivering positivity that is accessible for everyone while inspiring people to take action while doing things that matter.
