    Sicuani, Bolivia

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Joyce Carrasco visited several small, Bolivian towns around Lake Titicaca in August during her work as a United Methodist. After having a delicious meal made by a host family in Sicuani, Bolivia, she wandered outside and saw an Aymara couple working in the field. The Aymara are an indigenous people in the Andes and Altiplano regions of South America.

“As my eyes panned the area, I saw the Aymara woman moving quickly among the sheep with a bundle of reeds latched to her arms and a gentleman pulling his boat ashore,” she said. “The harshness of the altitude requires the human body to slow down, sit for a while and contemplate creation. It was a reminder that life is precious and needs to be held gently.”

While sitting on the shore of Lake Titicaca in Sicuani, I got sight of the quiet busyness of an Aymara couple. He was pulling the small boat in while she scurried about tending to the sheep, potatoes and reeds for roof thatch.
