A Colorado University Announces a Multimillion Dollar Campaign & Adds Six New Sports
Universities across the country are getting creative with how they attract students and supporters. CSU-Pueblo is just one of those Universities. This multimillion dollar campaign boasts an ambitious $25 million goal includes three major components. The first is $15 Million for scholarships and programs, second is $5 Million for a student center renovation, and the final $5 Million will go towards an athletics expansion from 16 to 22 sports teams and facility enhancements, according to the On The Move website.
The On The Move campaign is being run by the Colorado State University-Pueblo Foundation which is a non-profit organization that supports the University in getting donations for scholarships. Currently they have raised $5.45 Million in it's quiet phase, which is 21.8% of the total goal. The new sports CSU-Pueblo plans to add includes, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s cross country, men’s indoor and outdoor track and field and women’s swimming and diving. These six new sports look to attract more students to come to the division 2 NCAA university.
“As a result of the six new sports, we will bring in at least 130 new student-athletes to the university,” CSU-Pueblo athletics director Joe Folda said, “And that doesn’t take into account the friends, girlfriends and boyfriends that may follow them here.” Joe Folda continued by telling the supporters, staff, faculty, and students at the campaign launch announcement event that the sport of "lacrosse is very beneficial, as it is one of the fastest growing sports in America." He went on to say, "the addition of the six new sports, bringing the university total to 22, would be somewhat of a “final step” in CSU-Pueblo becoming the “Jewel of the South” in Colorado."
CSU-Pueblo Foundation chair Dan DeRose spoke on the details of the campaign, and noted that although they knew it was going to be a difficult challenge, the foundation board stepped up to the occasion and unanimously said, “Let’s do it.” CSU-Pueblo looks to regain the title as the fastest growing University in Southern Colorado.
