Raising America: How parents see the news

    More from Veena23

    Racism Surrounding Miss America 2014

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Veena is a former Miss California turned mom, and half-Indian herself. "I was the first Indian Miss California and the first to compete on the Miss America stage and never dealt with any of the hatred. Watching Nina being crowned made me feel proud as a woman that she accomplished a huge goal, proud to be an Indian and angry that people could not see past her skin color," she said.

She is seeking your parenting insights: How can we teach our children that diversity is beautiful when children also see public messages of racism like this? Parents, how do you teach your kids to embrace diversity? Leave your comments below, tweet us with the #RaisingAmerica hashtag or leave your thoughts on Facebook.com. And for more conversations like this, watch Raising America every week day at 12 p.m. ET on HLN.

Read more about the Miss America winner here on CNN.com.

Miss America 2014, Nina Davuluri is the first Indian Miss America. Shortly after her crowning on Sunday September 15th racist remarks started circulating on twitter, instagram and facebook. Some people stated that she was not a "real" American but perhaps linked to Al Qaida, or convenient stores, terrorism, etc. It seemed that all the remarks were founded on ignorance and hate.

With all the derogatory comments I have read in the past day, I am left wondering as a parent...what are we missing in parenting and education? Why aren't people more tolerant? Less ignorant? More culturally competent? Why do people feel the need to state their less than desirable opinions via social media outlets? How do we get past skin colors? How do I make sure I instill the idea that diversity is beautiful to my child?
