Why Not Me?
My name is Sabrina Moyer, and Colton Ryder is my son. He was born with Down syndrome. My husband, Dan, has some experience with disabled individuals, but I have our first born, Remington, to raise and no experience to draw on of my own. I have to tell my family, some of whom live on the other side of the world in Cyprus. It will take my father weeks to comprehend the situation. It will take me even longer.
As I struggle through this time I cry myself to sleep asking “Why me?” As Colton and Remi play together one day, I realize I have been asking the wrong question. It should have been, “Why not me?” I realize that Colton has not only changed my perspective in life, but has also given me a higher purpose to which I aspire to everyday in raising my children. I vow to both myself and to him to become his strongest advocate and fiercest ally.
It is for this reason that I create Special Miracles, a community platform that brings together many people under one banner. That platform climbs to thirty thousand members in less than a year’s time, and I continue to take further steps in leading it out into an even wider audience. I seek to educate anyone who may encounter one of these amazing individuals while simultaneously easing new parents’ fears during their own pregnancies and in the days ahead.
