Navy Yard shooting
Guns -vs- Mental Health
Obama said Americans should honor the victims of last Monday's shooting by insisting on a change in gun laws. "It ought to obsess us," Obama said.
NRA chief Wayne LaPierre wants ‘Broken’ Mental Health System fixed and rejects calls for more gun control legislation
Last week’s bloodbath at the Washington Navy Yard wouldn’t have occurred if shooter Aaron Alexis didn’t have access to a gun, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre admitted Sunday.
But the outspoken firearms advocate wasn’t calling for gun control, instead reiterating his contention that mentally ill people — and not the widespread availability of guns in America — are the root cause of violence.
So which is it?
Guns, mental health issues, or BOTH?
How about this. Instead of banning certain types of guns or guns in general, how about we introduce legislation for stricter background checks on those known to have mental health issues and or those using medications for depression, bi-polar disorder, Schizophrenia, etc.?
Mental health issues like these are certainly grounds for refusing the right to gun ownership pretty much like felons are banned from gun ownership.
After all, it seems more times than not that mental health issues have been the root cause of most of our recent mass shootings.
