This festival is celebrated by people of all communities and all religions in Kerala.. King Mahabali who ruled over the land in times of yore is believed to return to earth during this time to fulfill his wish to see his subjects living in harmony.
The floral design is the face of the Kathakali dancer. It is called a pookkalam (Pua kalam) and it is made of flowers, grass, leaves and berries. This is drawn to welcome the KIng Mahabali.
The decorations worn by elephants during the festival. The nettipattam (a gold plated ornament), kuda(umbrella) and alavattam.(peacock feather fans), all three symbolize divine regalia.
