A plea to all citizens of World on behalf of Kenya
My Name is Gladys Murage. I am a Kenyan and a US resident residing in Indianapolis IN. I have been in the US since the late 1990's.
It has been tough to watch the Westgate Crisis and see innocent lives slain and hundreds injured. My family is safe, but so many other families are aching and hurting from losing their loved one, or struggling with upcoming hospital bills to settle from injuries due to the Westgate Massacre.
Along with my tears I have been so silently proud of the strides that my Homeland Kenya has made democracy, new constitution, a robust growing economy with a GDP greater than 6 the last 6 years or so running. The infrastructure has come around big time. So has the transparency of the culture and accountability.
Watching the quick response by Kenya police and defense who were not scared to run into a building with guns cocked while everyone else was running away from the West gate mall in such a coordinated effort, and watching the unfolding triage set up by Kenya Red Cross, or the brave selfless Kenyans helping save each other lives by driving the injured to the hospital; made so proud to be a Kenyan. It also highlighted to me what a free aspiring society Kenya is and why we are and should be striving in betterment of the country.
The ensuing blood drive had long l lines and the Kenya red Cross could not get to all the donors on day #1.The Safaricom (Local largest Cellular phone provider) fund drive donation through MPESA has been operational for over 2 days in Kenya and is almost close to 100 million KSH donated by local Kenyans to aid with relief efforts of #Westgate. I quickly realized that sitting on the couch crying my heart out and lamenting woe to Al Shaabab is not really helping me or the affected population in Kenya. I was also approached by local private citizens in Indianapolis wanting to give me money to me to send to Kenya. I shunned away from that because I wanted for there to be 100% accountability.
I did my research last night and found the Kenya Red Cross and verbally interviewed them on what the current situation was and what they desperately needed. They answered back and that was when my plea was officially born.
We do not have a properly established medical insurance system for all in Kenya yet, someday I am hopeful, usually you must submit a title deed of your property to the hospital on admission and you do not get it back until after settling your full bill. Local Kenyans survive by doing family and Friends health fund drives (Harambee). But there is too far many injured parties this time to rely on this system. I am a mere middle class person at best and as much as I want to, this is bigger than just me alone trying to help.
I have reached to the Kenya Red Cross Director of Public relations and resource Mobilization (09/24/13 2.30am EST). I am volunteering in outreach activities for Kenya Red Cross here abroad in the USA. This organization has never reached out to the International community before and we are figuring it out together as we go along, I have the official letters from the organization detailing what they need donation and help with. I can provide this information and my Kenya Red Cross contact if and as you need them for verification that my purposes and plea is pure in heart and intent for entirely charitable purposes.
I am pleading with everyone to please join my fellow Kenyans who were injured or slain in the Nairobi West Gate shootings #westGate # Weareone.
I don’t want you to contribute just for the sake of it.
Here are the seriously valid reasons why you should based on the situation presently:
• Security guards and Kenya defense forces (6) who gave their lives to others and died serving the great upcoming country of Kenya.
• Slain and injured Ordinary citizens, and foreign nationalities visiting Kenya who were slain in the Westgate Massacre
• The hospital bills and funeral costs will be a big headache once the limelight has shone away from Kenya
• The expensive post toll to the Kenya Red Cross (a regional chapter) who answered the call bravely, urgently and with heart will be huge. The Red Cross of Kenya also runs the ambulance system which played a huge role in the massacre.
Why am I am recommending Kenya Red Cross?
Because for one it is run very efficiently and with transparency and is able to sustain itself under normal circumstances from donations, it hotel and ambulance fleet through E-plus. This is was not a normal circumstance by any means.
Secondly, this organization is active in Kenya year in year out, and has a wide reach and has an office in every County of Kenya even the rural areas e.g. by Mount Kenya in Kirinyaga County where I am from, there is a branch there. Check them out at their website Kenya Red Cross www.kenyaredcross.org
Please on my behalf stand with me and donate to Kenya Red Cross. This is how you participate:
• Wire money, or pay via PayPal account or Mpesa as outlined at www.kenyaredcross.org by using your Visa. MasterCard, Discover.AMEX or wire transfer to outlined bank accounts on the website.
• Secondly consider organizing a local drive for Gloves, bandages band aids and tape and medical supplies to collect and store blood donations will help and then we can later on combine or collected supplies and I can ship to The Kenya Red Cross once the drive is closed.
Please help stand with Kenyans against terror and give whatever you can. If you cannot due to your unique life circumstance, I thank you kindly for reading my plea. Don't stop there please still pass this along.
Let us defeat terror together and stand united and forever remember that we are connected
#Weareone #Westgate. Whatever your religion, race, creed, nationality, beliefs, gender, sexuality, political affiliations or income potential; any donation whether as in supplies or money will be greatly appreciated. We are a one big universal World family and are citizens of the world connected #weareone
