Raising America: How parents see the news
What exactly IS Lyme Disease?
By Tom Austin, Topix News National Editor,
Lyme Disease is now recognized as the fastest spreading vector-bourne disease in the country, yet most physicians are behind in recognizing and addressing this emerging health crisis!
Lyme Disease refers to the infectious illness caused by the bacteria which crosses into the blood stream of a human during the bite of an infected tick. Many co-infections may also be transmitted by the same bite. Some people get a bulls-eye rash, others notice a change in mood, a general feeling of fatigue.
The number of Lyme cases has spiked! The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recently changed their numbers from 30,000 to 300,000 Nationwide.
Even this number is known to be only a percentage of actual patients - with doctors and the public not being aware of all the symptoms and distress caused by a single infected tick bite, there are countless actual case numbers!
It can be expected that a minority of patients with Lyme Disease will be symptomatic following a recommended course of antibiotics of weeks, months and sometimes years - due to a variety of other factors.
"Doctors can be located on the ILADS site (International Lyme Disease Association). In Georgia, we do have support groups for patients and I will gladly offer our assistance" reveals Mrs. Karen Sherrill of Georgia Lyme Disease Connection.
Karen Sherrill, a Georgia native, is passionate about awareness of Lyme Disease! Having lost her own Father years ago to complications of the disease, then her college bound son was diagnosed with Lyme and now she herself battles this debilitating disease!
The Georgia Lyme Disease Connection is focused on Research, Education, Prevention and Patient Support for those diagnosed or who think perhaps they may have Lyme and need answers!
Mrs. Sherrill will be on Tom Livsey(Twomucht) BlogTalk National Talk Show next Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at 8:30pm eastern. She will discuss the flood of new medical cases of this underlying missed diagnosed disease.
She will also talk about their upcoming statewide fundraiser on Saturday, October 5, 2013. There will be a great Music Festival, 4 great bands, and a Motorcycle Poker Run from Jasper to Helen, Dahlonega and back to Jasper, Georgia.
If companies would like to donate to Awareness of Lyme Disease - here is your opportunity!! A very special thank you to out sponsors for this event - Roccos in Jasper, Smiley’s in Dahlonega, Helen for allowing us to cruise thru the town during Octoberfest, and for the many, many Motorcycle Clubs based in Georgia that are participating!!
