Obamacare: Your story
No where to turn.......
In 2008, a LASIK surgeon used the wrong chart when performing corrective vision surgery on my eyes. Both eyes were significantly over-corrected and I was left with only 430 microns of corneal tissue and severely distorted vision. A legal suit went essentially no where. I retired with only limited health coverage. A year passed and I attempted to get health care. I was denied! I tried the following year and I was "accepted" into a program that would cost me over $1200 a month, with a high deductible -- and would not cover anything related to my eyes. Retired, I couldn't afford $1200, so I waited. Last year, life hit: I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I also began to develop cataracts. My medical costs escalated overnight and no insurance company will now touch me -- at any cost. Currently, my out-of-pocket costs average close to $1000 a month, and that's with skimping: buying prescriptions out of the country, living with distorted vision, and attempting to keep the diabetes and Hashimoto's under control with diet. I'm sick. I have severe night sweats every night -- but I can't afford any additional medical care. I know I wouldn't pass a driver's test if given it today -- so I limit my driving. I have had specially made glasses and reverse geometry contact lenses, but my corneas are so malleable that my vision isn't consistent. I try to substitute teach, but I have limitations. I try to stay positive, but also know that the issues have erupted to a point where, without health care, I'm on a dangerous path. I'm $40,000 in medical debt and there are no other options. But today I'm optimistic: with Obamacare I have possibilities! From what I calculate, my monthly costs in the program will be under $200 a month -- and everything will be covered. This is the gift I've been waiting and praying for!!
