HARLEM GLOBETROTTER HELPS ANSWER LETTER TO SANTA WITH ANTI-BULLYING ASSEMBLY

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Twins Ryan and Amber Suffern got to meet one of the Harlem Globetrotters yesterday after the basketball star hosted an anti-bullying assembly for the entire school. Harlem Globetrotter Ant Atkinson spun a ball on his finger and even gave the twins autographed basketballs. CNN affiliates WRAL and WNCN were at Rocky Mount Prep and produced a video that ran on CNN’s New Day this morning. The twins’ mother said her kids had a “blast” meeting the star.

The Harlem Globetrotters have a lot in common with Santa Claus -- they travel the world putting smiles on millions of faces. The Globetrotters gave Santa an assist on Thursday when the team helped answer a boy's letter directed at the North Pole.

Harlem Globetrotters star Ant Atkinson presented the team’s “ABCs of Bullying Prevention” to 600 students at Rocky Mount Prep. The young audience included 8-year old twins Ryan and Amber Suffern, who recently received national attention when Ryan’s letter to Santa Claus went viral. Part of Ryan’s letter reads:

"Dear Santa ... I wanted a (remote control) car and helicopter, but I don't want that (anymore). (Kids) at school are still picking on Amber and it’s not fair. …”

Ant used the Globetrotters’ signature ball handling skills in a presentation that focused on Action, Bravery, and Compassion as ways to combat bullying. The Globetrotters designed the program in coordination with the National Campaign to Stop Violence. Stars of the team will bring the program to over 300 schools during the 2013-14 school year.

Following the assembly, Ant presented Ryan and Amber with autographed basketballs and named the twins “Junior Phenoms” for the Globetrotter Spirit they demonstrate as siblings with an exemplary friendship.

Ryan, Amber, and their family will also attend a Globetrotters game when the team brings their new tour to Raleigh at PNC Arena on Sunday, March 2 at 3 p.m.
