A visit to Hofuf Camel Market, Saudi Arabia
Hofuf also known as Al-Hasa and Al-Ahsa is the major urban center in the Al-Ahsa Oasis in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.
The city proper has a population of 1,200,000 and is part of a larger populated oasis area of towns and villages of around 600,000. It is located inland, southwest of Abqaiq and the Dhahran-Dammam-Al-Khobar metropolitan area on the road south to Haradh. It is the closest city to the famous Ghawar oil field, one of the world's largest conventional (land-based) fields.
Hofuf is famous for its dates (Khallas) and the famous Camel Market located away from the city centre.
The best day to visit this place is on a Thursday, and the best time is just after 6am when the weather is perfect. I make it a point to travel to the market during winter because it’s much cooler than the extreme heat that Saudi has to offer.
You can see a lot of Camels, of all sizes and colour on sale at this market. The different colours of camels were amazing - they ranged from white (rare and expensive) to the golden brown we generally know, to dark ebony. Customers & Traders drive all the way from the UAE and Qatar to purchase the best of the best, even crossing the million riyal mark for the camel of their choice.
