This iReport is part of an assignment:
Obamacare: Your story
I'm going to be online at 12:01 Tues. Oct. 1st to sign up for Obamacare
My husband of 34 years died of cancer at the age of 52. We worked all our life, never borrowed money from anyone and always paid our bills. We had our own business, lived a very healthy lifestyle and looked forward to growing old together. We could not afford health insurance premiums however. After 4 years of paying for a catastropic policy, the premiums doubled and tripled til we were faced with either going out of business and trying to find jobs with benefits, or taking a chance on staying with a business we loved (as artists, we owned our own art gallery where we sold our work as well as encouraged other artists by selling their works). We stayed in business.
But Cancer appeared in our life and, even with an excellent prognosis from our doctors, the cancer spread and my husband couldn't get well. He worried so much about how we would ever climb out of an impossible debt to all the doctors, hospitals, labs, etc. The stress over questions, like how would I survive without him took its toll even though he was the bravest man I'll ever know. He faced life and death with humor, cherished the life we shared, and gave much to others.
He died Jan. 30, 2004.
So that is why I'm going to be first in line to enroll in the Affordable Care Act Program. I'm doing it for Boe. I'm doing it for myself. I'm signing up to support one of the best things this country has ever done for all of us. Much gratitude to all those who brought Obama to office and helped implement the AFA!!!!!
