Dharmadam is a small village in Thalassery Municipality of Kerala, South India. . It is located at a distance of four kilometers on the North-west of Thalassery Town. It is situated between Thalassery and Kannur. Dharmadam, is an island, encircled, on three sides, by the Anjarakandy river, flowing from the North, and taking diversion towards the East and the West and descending into the Arabian sea that lies on the South and South West. Dharmadam is also famous for the Government Brennen College a 100 years old college and Dharmadam Island. There is a small railway station in Dharmadam where only the local passenger trains stop. Dharmadam Island is a small 2 hectare island lies 100 meters from the mainland. This island, covered with coconut palms and dense bush is a beautiful sight from the Muzhappilangad drive-in beach. During low tide, one can walk into it from the beach. Dharmadam is at times referred to as the land of theyyams and circus. It has four desams (villages) namely, Melur, Andalur, Palayad and Dharmadam. It is also home to famous Andaloor Kavu. The annual festival here draws thousands of devotees. A variety of theyyams are performed during the weeklong fest, which falls normally in the month of February. During the festive season the entire village follows vegetarian diet and offers rice flakes, jaggery and plantains to all guests. Dharmadam is fast becoming a tourist hub. Probably this is the only place in North Kerala where one can get Oyster, mussel, crab, clams and a variety of fresh fish. One can also enjoy the local drink- toddy, which is extracted from the coconut tree to enjoy your evening. The State Govt. has done quite an impressive work in developing it into a tourism attractive destination with ropeway to the island in the expansion plan. Finally, I got married to a lovely girl from this place.
