In 2012 my husband experienced kidney failure that put him out of work. In order to afford to keep cobra coverage on him I had to give up health insurance for me and my children, as we were all covered by his plan from his employer. Due to my husbands various health complications and home dialysis 6 days a week I am only able to work part time. Our income is low enough that my children were eligible for state Medicaid, but there is no Medicaid coverage for me. I live in one of the states that has refused to expand Medicaid and our income levels are so low that I will not be eligible for the tax rebates to purchase health care from the new exchanges. So I will continue to be left in the cold and hope I don't get sick. Fortunately, thanks to a local church and their various partners my town has a community free clinic where I can at least get basic care. Others are not so lucky.
