A day at Champ De Mars Racecourse for The Duchess of York Cup, Mauritius
Our first visit to Champ De Mars Racecourse in Port Louis, Mauritius was for The Duchess of York Cup for the Mauritius Horse Racing 2013 season. My mate Sudhakran Chettiar had decided to take us along and he was our guide to the world of Mauritian Horse Racing.
It was a beautiful sunny day and I enjoyed sipping on some local beer called Phoenix that I had fallen in love with during my holiday in the country. Waiting for the races to start, my sister and I decided to place some bets for the first race of the day. Excited and hoping to win back the meagre amount we had placed a bet on, we sat at the finish line stands taking in the scenes of excitement and pre-race chatter as to who would win it. The locals seemed to know every horse and its rider. It was almost like being at a football stadium with opposing supporters staring each other down before the start of the game. Each horse had its supporters. The scene was electric.
The horses were at the starting line, prepared to take off the second the gun went off.
The horses lunge forward and the crowds are on their feet. I could feel the earth vibrate under my feet. At that very moment, I knew why the locals were so addicted to this sport. Money, Beer and Horses, a fantastic day at Champ De Mars. Nothing like it !
