This iReport is part of an assignment:
Shutdown over: What next?
What do I say to my child?
- dsashin, CNN iReport producer
I'd like to call you names. I'd like to tell you that you've failed.
But more importantly I'd like to know what to tell my children. I'd like to explain to them why Mommy and Daddy are so stressed. I'd like to tell them that it is our fear of the unknown that has Mommy and Daddy so upset. I'd like to tell them that it's okay and that we'll be okay tomorrow. I'd like to tell them that our government is here to take care of us, that they are nice people who care for us...
But right now I would be lying if I told our young sons that. Our 8-year old wants to know why the President can't do something to stop the shutdown. We're trying to explain how our government works. Our son wanted to know if his school would shut down. He asked us how much money we had. These are not things a child should worry about or even ponder for a second.
You are interfering with my job as Mommy. You are threatening our family's very existence over your reckless standoff...how long will you do this? And by "you", I'm referring to BOTH sides? You are all guilty. I'm sure there are some of you who are trying to make things work, but I'm sorry...you aren't feeling the brunt of this as we are. You are sitting happily with your large paychecks coming as scheduled. You are simply trudging to work each day wondering who will the blame be passed to next.
How long will you let this go on? We rent. We were hoping to buy a home next year. We JUST came off of the summer furlough and you've hit us AGAIN. How long will you play chicken? Will you let this go one week? Two weeks? Will you take it one month to the point that we cannot pay our rent and we lose our home? Will you take it to that point that our children have to transfer schools?
Enough is enough. You've both proven that you can not flinch. You've shown us how tough you are and that you will not waiver. Ooh, you are all so tough. Congratulations.
But is anyone out there a leader? Do you not realize that a leader cares for his/her people and clears the path for them to be successful?
This is enough. It's time to truly remember who we are, who YOU work for. You work for us. You work for ME--a stay home mom with two loving, giving and very smart boys. You work for ME and my husband-- a very talented and passionate federal employee. You work for my family.
And I demand that you put us first. Stop with the blame. Stop with the game of chicken and reopen the government.
Or maybe you'd like to talk to my children about why you think it's just fine to threaten everything they know that makes their homes loving, happy and secure?
I have lost all faith in you. I have no desire to vote in the next election. You might want to consider how many others are like me out there...you might just want to start thinking about how you are going to work extra hard and NOW in order to get my vote. Because as of now, my voting days are done. Who knows how many others feel as I do.
But first you have to show me that you care about my family and those 799,999 other federal employee's families out there.
Stop this now. Please.
