    Obamacare Begins!

October 1, 2013 is a historic day in the United States; as it is the first day that Americans could enroll online in one of the Healthcare Exchanges offered nationwide under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as “Obamacare”. Open enrollment began, even as the country simultaneously entered into a government shutdown. In many states, the Obamacare online systems suffered technical glitches (most of which were due to servers being overwhelmed by the unexpected numbers of people accessing the system), and system crashes. However, California’s online system didn’t go down, but rather, was noticeably slowed down by the large number of people accessing the system (one million page views in the first hour, followed by 800,000 page views every hour after, according to Covered California staff). California’s version of the healthcare exchange is called “Covered California” and the Covered California event at Union Station in Downtown, Los Angeles, was one of the numerous “live infomercials” held across the state to give Californians an opportunity to ask questions and get answers and information on what Obamacare means for Californians and their families.
